These aren't easy times for John Giannandrea , Apple 's head of artificial intelligence and machine learning . Just a month ago, the executive lost his role overseeing Siri 's revamp , and now the same thing has happened to him with the Californian company's home robotics initiative .

According to Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman , Apple has removed John Giannandrea from the leadership of the project, which aims to enter a new category of devices. The journalist indicates that Tim Cook, the company's CEO, has lost faith in the aforementioned individual to lead the creation of new products.

The restructuring will put Apple's robotics team under the supervision of John Ternus , the current head of hardware engineering at Apple. Ternus, along with Craig Federighi, is one of Cook's favorite executives, and his role within the company is among the most important. There is even speculation that Ternus could be Apple's next CEO, although such a significant management change is still years away.

According to the report, the transfer of the robotics project from John Giannandrea to John Ternus will be finalized before the end of April. Apple has yet to publicly announce anything about its entry into the smart home robot segment, but this leadership change could serve to streamline development efforts.

Without Siri or the home robots under his supervision, John Giannandrea will continue to focus on developing the underlying artificial intelligence models for Apple products. Gurman indicates that while the executive has shown no signs of leaving the company, there seem to be signs in Cupertino that he could be on the way out in the not-too-distant future .

John Giannandrea joined Apple in 2018 as senior vice president of machine learning and artificial intelligence strategy. He came from Google, where he served as head of the search engine and the company's early efforts in AI.

With John Ternus taking over the robotics project, and Mike Rockwell as the new head of Siri , Apple is looking to make up for lost time in two areas that could be crucial going forward. As for home robots, the initiative began to gain traction after the cancellation of the Apple Car .

Recall that Apple is reportedly working on a device with a robotic arm and an iPad-like screen. There have also been rumors of a possible home companion robot, similar to the Amazon Astro or the Samsung Ballie . In any case, none of these products will see the light of day under the direct leadership of John Giannandrea.
